Robotic Surgery

Since the advent of robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery in 2000, the use of robot technology has increased exponentially. The robot-assisted radical prostatectomy for the operative treatment of prostate cancer has become the standard of care in the United States. The urologic conditions that heretofore have been treated with traditional open surgery are now being treated with laparoscopic and robot-assisted laparoscopic techniques. These include pyeloplasty (repair of obstruction of the urinary tract between the kidney and the ureter), partial nephrectomy for selected kidney tumors, ureteral reimplant (repair of the abnormal ureter as it enters the bladder), nephrectomy (removal of the kidney due to infection or tumor), and cystectomy (removal of the bladder due to bladder cancer).
